You probably don’t check out the “about” section of your Facebook page a whole lot, being that you already know everything there is to know about yourself. But if you happened to do so today, you would have noticed something different — your listed email address has been changed to one with your Facebook profile name and then @facebook.com. Yes, Facebook gave you a Facebook email address without your permission.

Luckily, the corner-cutters at Lifehacker have already come up with four simple steps to reinstate the email address you intended everybody to see.

1. Click “About” on your profile and scroll down to your email address. Click “Edit” to change them.

2. Click on the circle next to your Facebook email address and change its setting to “Hidden From Timeline”.

3. Click on the circle next to your other email addresses and change their settings to “Shown On Timeline.”

4. Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit popup (Don’t forget this step).

This won’t work, however, if you are one of the lucky folks who haven’t been switched over to Timeline. (And, yes, there are some of us out there.)

If that’s the case, just suck it up. It’s a small price to pay for having avoided the much-despised redesign. Anyway, if someone wants to get in touch with you through Facebook they’re not going to use your email, but rather hit you on Facebook’s popular internal messaging system — which is a different thing altogether. After all, who other than Mark Zuckerberg would bother using a Facebook.com email address?
